~cue in Berlioz's Harold in Italy. While we're waiting for Gerald to put up his photos of Santa Maria Maggiore, he's got lovely pictures of San Paolo fuori le mura. Here's one of the central aisle showing the baldacchino and pontifical altar. At the left edge is the 11th century Paschal candle. The clerestory windows are alabaster. When we visited, the mass transit decided to strike for the day, so we were stuck there until they got over their tantrum. The day was cold and grey, and after we had looked at each pope's portrait medallion, we went to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel to pray...a lot. I'm happy that Gerald enjoyed his time there. Check out the rest of Gerald's pictures of the basilica.
